Cutting the Cost of Organic Food


I’ve always enjoyed wandering through local Seattle markets. The bright arrangements of color, the shuffling of feet and brushing of rain coats, the juicy fruit samples, the ache of a fiddle or the rhythm of an upright bass. Somehow, when I’m at a farmer’s market, big city living feels more like neighborhood living.

Last month, I was shocked to discover I spent over a hundred extra dollars on vegetables and fruit. I didn’t think cutting my oats intake in half would be so expensive! I realized that instead of wincing at grocery store prices, buying in-season products from a local farmer is actually a better deal. It’s actually better for our bodies to eat seasonally, anyway. Variety is best! When we eat the same foods consistently over a long period of time, we can actually develop allergies to them.
